The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has introduced the Semester System for Higher Secondary students. From the academic session 2026-27, students studying in Class XI and Class XII will continue under this semester-based education system. The new system aims to reduce examination pressure, improve continuous learning and encourage practical education among students.
What is the WBCHSE Semester System?
Under the Semester System, the Higher Secondary course has been divided into four semesters instead of one annual examination. Students will appear in separate examinations during different semesters throughout the Higher Secondary course.
- Class XI includes Semester I and Semester II
- Class XII includes Semester III and Semester IV
- Each semester will have separate examinations
- Both MCQ and descriptive examinations will be conducted

Admission and Registration Process
- Students passing Madhyamik Examination can take admission in Semester I.
- Registration with WBCHSE is compulsory for all students.

Passing Rules
- Students must secure minimum 30% marks in theory papers separately.
- Students must secure minimum 30% marks in practical/project separately.
- Passing in language subjects is compulsory.
- Highest marks in five subjects will be considered for final total.
Supplementary Examination System
Students failing in any semester will get another chance through Supplementary Examinations.
For Class XI Students
- Students failing in Semester I can reappear during Semester II.
- If they still fail, they must repeat Semester I and Semester II next year.
For Class XII Students
- Students failing in Semester III can appear again with Semester IV.
- Backlog papers can be cleared later within the registration validity period.
